Art Therapy
Art therapy is a projective
technique used to help each student look at his/her strengths and ways of
coping. By "projective" him/herself in symbol and analogy
into artwork, the student has access to a different perspective on
him/herself. Art therapy then becomes a tool for greater
self-awareness and serves as a way of processing material in which the
student feels a sense of control.
In a group situation, the
students learn to identify "a safe place" feelings, techniques for
handling stress, and way of processing some of the materials which surfaces
during other aspects of life. They will become aware of their own
personal symbols and use of color and how to use the artwork to enhance the
therapeutic process. The empowerment model of Art Therapy encourages
students to choose from a range of materials to express themselves at a a
pace which they are comfortable.
Behavior Management
Keystone Academy's behavior
program is based on behavior management principles. Desirable,
positive behavior is reinforced or rewarded and undesirable behavior is
extinguished or consequenced. Staff must teach and reinforce/reward
appropriate behaviors on a consistent basis. A level/point system is
used in order to provide feedback about student behavior and to provide an
incentive for students to display appropriate and acceptable school
behavior.
