What is SAFE?
Keystone Newport News has adopted a program to encourage and to support the demonstration
of self-management skills. The SAFE system records the daily success of
each resident who is able to avoid displays of aggression or other unsafe
behaviors such as fighting, restraints, and property destruction. The SAFE
program recognizes individual and group success in Unit assemblies where weekly
progress is reviewed. Continued success in anger management and
self-control leads to individual and group rewards.
What you see?
Each unit is furnished with a SAFE Board that contains the name of each
resident. Each day in Community Group, the resident receives a star if that
resident has avoided successfully te expression of aggressive or other dangerous
behavior. The stars for Saturday and Sunday are awarded on Monday. whenever
a star is added, the resident's weekly/monthly total is increased by one.
At any time, one can consult the SAFE Board to observe the student's progress in
that week.
How is it operated?
Each week the entire facility will meet in an Assembly. The
success of each resident and each Unit will be recognized. A Day Room is
recognized when each individual in the Unit receives a certificate for a week of
safe performance. Awards will be made based on the Awards Schedule.
Awards increase as individuals and Unit maintain periods of SAFE success.
