Substance Abuse Component

Keystone Newport News provides a Substance Abuse Treatment Component to children ages 11 to 16 that have been admitted to the residential program.  The Component encourages them to reach and to maintain a healthy lifestyle without the need of drugs and/or alcohol.

The program recognizes that Substance Abuse is a critical problem with serious implications for the social, physical, and economic health of the adolescent, that substance abuse results in varying degrees of dysfunction requiring comparable degrees of appropriate and individualized intervention and treatment.  The Component teaches the adolescent that alcohol and drug abuse is treatable, that children have unlimited potential, and that addictions can be brought into remission through not using drugs/alcohol and participation in therapy and support groups.   The Component provides a structure for individuals who have mild to moderate levels of substance abuse problems secondary to a primary Mental Health diagnosis.   The level of intensity of this component is a response to the client's level of need as determined at admission.

The Components consists of the following services:

  1. SASSI screening at the time of admission;
  2. Treatment Planning throughout treatment;
  3. Random Drug Testing on passes or day visits throughout treatment;
  4. Individualized Counseling for those with significant issues; certificate based programs from Hazleton;
  5. Small Group Counseling, groups arranged by the SA Therapist to ensure issue compatibility;
  6. Group Education for all residents admitted to the facility;
  7. Referrals to other service needs that cannot be met by the program for follow-up after treatment;
  8. Social Skills Building;
  9. Gender specific support group at the facility 2 times per month.
  10. In-house NA speakers meeting with outside speakers.

The resident will be given thorough information on the six stages of recovery:

  1. Abstaining from alcohol and other drugs;
  2. Separating from people, places, and things that promote the use of alcohol or drugs, and establishing a social network that supports recovery.
  3. Stopping self-defeating behaviors that prevent awareness of painful feelings and irrational thoughts.
  4. Learning how to manage feelings and emotional responsibility without resorting to compulsive behavior or the use of alcohol or drugs.
  5. Learning to change addictive thinking patterns that create painful feelings and self-defeating behaviors;
  6. Identifying and changing the mistaken core beliefs about oneself, others, and the world that promote irrational thinking.
